The men that pulled up in the Honda keep yelling, “You two boys come out here,” but Danny told me to hide down in the dark until he came back. He had to go get our backpacks before the men from the car found them. I didn’t want to wait for him. Grammie and Pops had told us to wait till they came back. But they never did. Danny said he had to beg Merridew to let him bring his stupid brother out scavenging and he’d be damned if he was going back with nothing. Danny said wait in the dark, so I waited.
